Septoplasty
After procedure instructions

WHAT TO EXPECT

  1. Mild nasal bleeding is common. A drip pad under the nose is helpful and can be used as needed. Change pad as needed for saturation. 

  2. Nasal congestion is common and expected post operative. Dissolvable stenting material is sometimes placed in the nose and remnants of this are cleaned out 1-2 weeks after surgery. Use Simply Saline Nasal Mist every 4-6 hours while awake. 

  3. Disrupted sleep is common due to nasal congestion. Recommend sleeping elevated for the first few nights. 

  4. If you use a C-pap you will be instructed on when you should resume using it. It is not recommend the first few nights after surgery .

  5. You may have stents in the nose. We will typically remove them the in 1 - 4  days. You will be instructed on when to schedule a post operative appointment and if you have stents. . 

  6. Sneeze with your mouth open. 

 

MEDICATIONS

  1. Post operative pain medication will be given when needed. Do not recommend taking Tylenol along with prescription pain medication as it contains Tylenol.

  2. Resume all home medications unless otherwise directed. 

  3. Ointment may be prescribed to use in the nasal vault as needed. 

 

ACTIVITY

  1. Minimize your activities to only light activity for 1 week post operative. 

  2. No heavy lifting, running or strenuous activity until directed otherwise. 

  3. No excessive bending forward that would put pressure on the nose. 

 

DIET

  1. Resume diet as tolerated. 

 

POST OPERATIVE APPOINTMENT

  1. Post operative appointments will varies but are typically within one week of surgery unless stents are in place. 

 

WHEN TO CALL

  1. Call office during routine business hours for questions, concerns or medication refills. 

  2. After hour calls for the physician to answer are important for excessive bleeding, as in soaking the drip pad within 5 minutes or a concerning amount to you, fever not responding to medication or airway concerns. We have a physician on call at all times. 

 

DO NOT DRIVE WITHIN 24 HOURS OF HAVING ANESTHESIA. 

DO NOT DRIVE IF YOU ARE TAKING PRESCRIPTION PAIN MEDICATION.
